Stop 10- Misshapen White Pines

White pine.

The path descends and crosses a stream and then rises again into a stand of young ash and maple with very large white pines scattered throughout. Not straight and tall like most white pines, these have multiple trunks sprouting from the same tree. This deformed growth is due to damage by white pine weevils. Because this insect pest is only active in full sun, this stand must have originated from an open field within the last 60-80 years.
